For the brain to function correctly its neurons must be connected correctly. Two important stages in the establishment of specific connectivity are (1) the outgrowth of axons to appropriate targets, and (2) the fine tuning of connection patterns by neural activity. Our lab is attempting to discover the fundamental mechanisms involved in these processes by a combination of mathematical modelling and in vitro experiments.
